After losing weight by diet and exercise or by comprehensive bariatric surgery, you have taken a significant step in embracing a healthier lifestyle and a slimmer physique. However, losing large amounts of weight can often cause excess fat and skin to accumulate in an array of body areas, resulting in loose skin folds appearing in the arms, thighs, midsection, and elsewhere. Plastic surgeons at the Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery can tighten the skin and recontour these areas for a more firm and taut appearance. A range of procedures can focus on specific areas and completely rejuvenate them, taking you on the next exciting step after losing weight.
After-Weight Loss Surgery Benefits
Once you have lost weight, you may be experiencing an unpleasant side effect: extra skin folds and fat deposits forming in a variety of body regions. This is very common after losing significant amounts of weight, and it can also be very disheartening, particularly after you have worked very hard to slim down. After-weight loss body contouring surgery can eliminate the excess skin folds and fat leftover after weight loss and help you achieve the body you’d hoped for. Benefits of body contouring surgery include:
- A tighter, flatter-looking stomach region
- Less flab and extra skin folds in the thighs, arms, hips, and buttocks
- A more toned appearance in a variety of body regions
One of our plastic surgeons can meet with you for an initial consultation to discuss after-weight loss body contouring surgery. At this meeting, all of your questions will be answered and the details of procedures explained. We will help you determine treatment options that can best meet your goals.
After Weight Loss Surgery Procedures
Lower Body Lift
Lower body lift surgery, sometimes known as a circumferential tummy tuck, aims to remove extra skin and fat from the midsection. Areas targeted for tightening and recontouring include the abdomen, hips, buttocks, love handles (flanks), and thighs. One of our plastic surgeons will make an incision around the beltline and down to the inner thighs. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is reshaped and pulled taut. This gives the entire midsection of the body a more fit appearance, and offers comprehensive recontouring and rejuvenation of the skin in the lower body. Since this is a rather extensive procedure, an in-hospital stay is usually required. Lower body lift surgery typically takes several hours to complete under general anesthesia. Bruising and swelling will be present during recovery; however, this should fade over the next few weeks, and any discomfort can be relieved with medication. A compression garment worn for a few weeks after surgery will help with healing. At least two to four weeks of rest will be necessary after lower body lift surgery. Although there will be noticeable scarring after this procedure, your OSU plastic surgeon will make every effort to make residual scarring as light and as easily hidden as possible.
Arm lift surgery is a way to recontour the arms and eliminate extra, flabby skin. The procedure is performed by making an incision from the armpit to the elbow. Your OSU plastic surgeon will remove extra skin and tighten the remainder for a more toned and taut appearance. Arm lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient, and lasts about one to three hours. Some bruising and swelling can be expected in the days following surgery, and patients should take care not to engage in strenuous activity for at least one month. Many patients resume normal daily routines within two weeks.
It’s common for extra skin and fat can accumulate in the thighs after weight loss. Thigh lift surgery can effectively address this and give the thighs a smoother, more fit appearance. Incisions are typically made from the bikini-line down to the thighs. Excess skin and fat are removed, and the remaining skin is reshaped for a more contoured look. Thigh lift surgery takes about two hours to complete, and can be performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient. Bruising and swelling is common in the days following surgery; compression garments can be used to help the thighs heal over the next few weeks. Many patients can be back to normal daily routines after two to three weeks. Patients will be advised not to partake in any strenuous activities for several weeks after thigh lift surgery.
Buttock lift surgery can give the buttocks a more athletic and smoother appearance after weight loss. Small incisions will be made at the top of the buttocks, or in some cases, in the hips or groin region. Your OSU plastic surgeon will remove excess fat and skin, and then lift and tighten the remaining skin, giving the buttocks a more taut, youthful aesthetic. Buttock lift surgery usually takes about three to six hours to complete. It can be performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Swelling and bruising will be present after buttock lift surgery, and a compression garment will need to be worn to facilitate healing. Patients should expect the area to continue healing for several months; however, most people who have buttock lift surgery are able to resume normal daily activities after about three weeks.
A number of other procedures can also be part of a post-bariatric or after-weight loss body contouring treatment. These include:
