Over time, most women will experience some degree of laxity or sagginess of the skin in the breasts, often due to the natural effects of aging, gravity, weight loss, or recent pregnancy. Fortunately, a procedure called a breast lift, medically referred to as mastopexy, can reverse these effects and give you a smoother, “perky”-looking bustline. Breast surgeons at the Ohio State University Department of Plastic Surgery are experienced and skilled plastic surgeons who can rejuvenate the appearance of your breasts with results that look both natural and beautiful. With breast lift surgery, you can eliminate the appearance of sagginess and attain your breast enhancement goals.
Breast Lift Benefits
Breast lift surgery is designed to rid the breasts of excess skin that may be causing droopiness or sagginess. The procedure tightens the remaining skin in the breast area and lifts the breasts to a higher position, making them appear firmer and more youthful. A breast lift addresses the effects that aging, recent weight loss, pregnancy and/or breastfeeding, and simple gravity can have on the breasts over time. The procedure can significantly improve the appearance of your breasts and reduce feelings of self-consciousness you may be having about the way you look.
Our plastic surgeon here at the OSU Department of Plastic Surgery can meet with you for an initial breast lift surgery consultation. At this meeting, you are encouraged to ask any and all questions you may have. Our doctor will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you, and address your concerns.
Although a breast lift can provide more youthful contour to the breasts, it is not designed to add volume or make the breasts appear significantly larger. If you are considering adding volume to the breasts in addition to lifting the breasts and eliminating excess skin, a breast lift with implants procedure may be an option for you.
Breast Lift Procedure
After you and your plastic surgeon have decided that breast lift surgery is the ideal procedure to meet your needs, you will be given pre-operative instructions and your surgery will be scheduled. During a breast lift procedure, an incision will be made on each breast around the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple) down to the underside of the breasts. Your surgeon will then remove excess skin and tighten the remainder. The nipples will also be moved to a higher position. The incisions are then closed.
This technique is the traditional breast lift surgery method; however, the specific technique utilized in your procedure will depend on your unique needs and breast enhancement goals. Mastopexy procedures typically take about two hours or less to complete, and are performed under general anesthesia. Breast lift surgery can be completed as an outpatient.
Breast Lift Recovery
You can expect some degree of swelling and bruising to be present during your recovery from breast lift surgery; however, this should be temporary and will likely fade over the next few days. Any discomfort can be relieved with medication. Many patients are able to resume normal daily activities after about one week. Our surgeons advise that patients do not engage in strenuous activities for several weeks after breast lift surgery in order to protect the breasts while they heal. Although there will be some residual scarring after surgery, our surgeon will make every effort to make scars appear as light as possible.
