Breast Reduction

Schedule Your Consultation. We look forward to meeting you.

Both men and women affected by overly large breasts often experience discomfort, embarrassment, and an extreme amount of self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery is a common and very effective procedure designed to rid the breasts of excess tissue and fat, ultimately giving you breasts that are more proportionate to your body frame and help you feel more comfortable both physically and emotionally. Many of our plastic surgeons at The Ohio State University Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are specialty trained in breast surgery procedures and can provide you with results that meet, and even exceed, your expectations.

Breast Reduction Benefits

For patients who experience breasts that are too full and too large for their bodies, a breast reduction can go a long way in helping alleviate a number of issues that overly large breasts can cause. Breast reduction surgery benefits include:

One of our plastic surgeons will evaluate you in an initial breast reduction consultation to determine your goals and answer all of your questions about the procedure. With breast reduction surgery, you can solve a number of problems at once and help you start feeling better about the way you look.

Breast Reduction Procedure

A traditional breast reduction surgery typically begins with an incision made from the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipples) down to the underside of the breast. Once this anchor-shaped incision has been made, your OSU plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and fat from the breasts and reposition the nipples. The breasts will then be reshaped and the incisions will be closed. Great care will be taken to make sure residual scarring is minimal, light, and easily hidden by clothing.

This procedure usually takes about two to four hours under general anesthesia, and can be performed as an outpatient. Some patients may not require removal of excess skin, and therefore may only need liposuction to achieve their breast reduction goals.

Patients who are breastfeeding or those who plan to breastfeed in the future will need to discuss their options with one of our plastic surgeons.

Breast Reduction Recovery

After breast reduction surgery, you will likely need to wear a surgical compression bra for about one month to facilitate the healing process. There will be some temporary bruising and swelling in the breasts, and you may need drainage tubes for the first few days after surgery to remove excess fluid build-up. Any discomfort you feel after breast reduction surgery can often be alleviated with medication. Many patients resume normal daily activities after about two weeks; however, you are advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least four weeks after the procedure.

Male Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia

Men who experience excess tissue and skin in the breasts often suffer from a common condition called gynecomastia. Often beginning in adolescence, gynecomastia can cause an extreme lack of self-confidence in one’s appearance, and can even lead to severe depression. The Ohio State University Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers discreet and effective male breast reduction surgery that can remove excess fat and skin from the chest for a flatter appearance.
