In addition to the OSU Department of Plastic Surgery, the Ohio State University Medical Center operates a unique and advanced wound care center strictly dedicated to the improvement of debilitating conditions caused by trauma, disease, and other factors. Founded in 2005, the Comprehensive Wound Center is a state-of-the-art facility that is fully-equipped with the latest technology and employs specialty-trained physicians to treat a variety of afflictions, including bone infections, crush injuries, diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, surgical wounds, late effects of radiation, and more.
Chronic wounds affect millions people in the U.S. alone. 1.3 to 3 million people are believed to be affected by pressure ulcers, and a large percentage of people with diabetes are at risk for the development of diabetic ulcers – a condition which can lead to limb amputation. Even more patients suffer from venous ulcers and wounds caused by arterial disease. The CWC’s doctors and staff have a combined 150 years of wound care and hyperbaric therapy experience to treat patients with a number of traumatic and chronic wound conditions, and the facility is known as a leader in wound research. The Comprehensive Wound Center is a Level I Trauma Center and is the only center in central Ohio that specializes in the treatment of adult burns. The facility offers emergency hyperbaric medicine treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning, traumatic injuries, and severe infections, and has access to the many specialized programs and resources available through the OSU Medical Center.
The CWC is designed to provide specialized care to help identify the cause of chronic, non-healing wounds and develop customized treatment plans. The facility is one of very few in the U.S. to receive National Institutes of Health grants for research activities, and is also known as a leading center for training physicians in wound healing.
Together, doctors at the Comprehensive Wound Center and the Ohio State University Medical Center can utilize the combination of advanced technologies and skilled, expert caregivers to help patients improve their condition and get on the road to better health.
